Elizabeth and William were the first generation of Providence Branch of Carpenters.

Page 141 - "In the fall of 1932, the city of Woodbury broke all tradition in electing as mayor Edmund H. Carpenter, Democrat. His republican opponent Ernest H. Riggs had been mayor for six years. Mr. Carpenter was the only democrat to be elected on the city ticket…There has not been a Democratic councilmen for over 25 years."
In the summer of 1934, Edmund was appointed postmaster and resigned as mayor.
Page 147 - In 1879, James Carpenter purchased the Gloucester County Democrat from William Gibbs. First office as on the second floor of the Green's Block. James later purchased the Carter Property, the "present" home of the newspaper. In 1911, son Edmund H. became associate in the business. In 1933, the paper was changed to a daily under the name of "The Evening News and The Gloucester County Democrat."
