Trenton Group Is Received by Pope
Rev. John J. Sweeney, Sister and Miss Kelly Honored
News dispatches from Rome report that Miss Isabel Sweeney and Miss Helen Kelly, both of Trenton, were received in audience by Pope Pius in Vatican City yesterday. They accompanied Miss Sweeney’s brother, the Rev. John J. Sweeney, on the visit to the Pope.
Miss Sweeney and Miss Kelly, attaches of the State House, are on a leave of absence and went to Rome to visit Father Sweeney, who is completing a theology course at the Vincentian Fathers’ House of Studies.
Previous to the audience with the Pope, Father Sweeney and the group were entertained at luncheon by Prince and Princess Barberini, members of one of Rome’s oldest families.
Father Sweeney and his sister are children of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Sweeney, of 429 Center Street. Father Sweeney was ordained to the priesthood in June, 1933, in the Congregation of Missions, known as the Vincentians. He has been in Rome since October 1933, continuing his studies. In addition to Miss Isabel Sweeney, he has tow other sisters, Mrs. Julius Erdy, of Trenton, and Mrs. James Crawley, of Milltown.
Father Sweeney is a graduate of the old St. John’s School on Lamberton Street and Trenton High School. He studied engineering for a time at Drexel Institute, Philadelphia, then decided upon the priesthood as his career and attended St. Joseph’s College, Princeton. He was ordained following graduation from St. Vincent‘s Seminary, Germantown Philadelphia.
